Reading Activities for encouraging early readers.

Reading is a complex skill and your child doesn't start to read all by themselves. You as a parent have to encourage an interest in reading and books. Here are 10 tips to help you encourage your child and teach them strategies to help them learn to read.

1. Look for everyday opportunities to read to your child.

Just as your child learnt to speak by being spoken to your child will learn to read by being read to. They will learn the language of books by being read to frequently.

2. Read your child's favorite books over and over.

Let your child turn the pages and talk about the pictures. Let her read the story back to you - "reading" the pictures is fine at this stage.

3. Help your child develop an awareness that print goes from left-to-right.

When reading a story together run your finger along the words and sentence.

4. Good talkers make good reader.

Listen to your child when they relate stories and day to day things they have done. This helps them sequence events and make sense of their world, which will in turn assist them to understand the sequence of a story.

5. Use your local library.

The best source of children books and it's free. Encourage your child to select books to borrow. Libraries often have special activities for your children.

6. Be a good role model.

Let your child see you reading so they can model your behavior. Have a quiet reading time when everyone in the family reads.

7. Take your child to interesting places.

This will develop language of the world around them. Discuss places - zoo, farms, shopping centers, parks, forests, the beach. This will help them predict stories they read about similar places.

8. Point letters around us and the sounds they make.

Encourage children to identify letters around them in their name, on signs, during a trip to the store, driving in the car and around the house. Learning phonics , the sounds letters make individually and together is an important part of reading.

9. Point out pictures and words around us.

Draw your child's attention to pictures, signs, advertisements and food packets telling her what is written as well as pointing out the differences in the symbols used. A lot of these words are written in different fonts, children need to know they are all still words that have a meaning.

10. Buy your children books.

Encourage other family members to do the same. Books can be given as birthday presents or for special occasions. Even as treat rather than toys or sweets.
